Why Your AI Keeps Forgetting You And What to Do About It

Why most AIs reset

A lot of products still treat every chat as a fresh start. That is simpler to build and cheaper to run. The model sees the current window of text, answers, and then the window is gone. You feel it the next morning when it asks who you are again.

Memory vs a bigger context window

A long context window is working memory. It can hold this document, this thread, this dump of notes. It is not the same as knowing you. Durable memory is stored on purpose: preferences, projects, decisions, the files that matter. Some products now offer both. Most still only offer the window.

Notes and threads representing AI memory across sessions
If you have to re-explain the job every session, you do not have a collaborator. You have a very fast stranger.

What to do about it

  • Keep a living brief — who you are, what you are building, what “good” looks like — and paste or pin it.
  • Use products with project files or memory, and actually write things down there.
  • Do not trust a chat log as an archive. Export the decisions you care about.

The tools that feel different six months later are the ones that accumulate. Everything else is a demo that never ends.

Everything you wanted to ask.
